My Business Philosophy

I grew up during the 50’s in Memphis, Tennessee, an area in West Tennessee flanked by Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama. Memphis is most noted for the Mississippi River, Elvis Presley, Beale Street, birth place of the Blues, W.C. Handy, Stax Records, and World Famous BBQ. Some Memphis Bridgeclaim Memphis as the BBQ Capitol of the World, but good luck convincing the folks from Texas, Kansas City and North Carolina of that fact.

The rapid growth of the electronic media during the 1950’s influenced my career path. "My first TV was monochrome and some of my favorite childhood shows were Captain Kangaroo, Superman, The Three Stooges, Laurel Steve 1955and Hardy, W.C. Fields, Charley Chan, Leave It To Beaver and so many more. Musically, I vividly remember my first 45 R.P.M. record of Hound Dog by Elvis Presley in 1956 on the RCA Victor Label."

I often reminisce about the events in the 60’s that led me to the Broadcast Industry as a career choice at the close of that decade. "I loved gathering around the TV every Sunday night with my family watching the Ed Sullivan Show and will never forget the first time the Beatles made their broadcast debut." In August of 1968, I was fortunate enough to see the Beatles play live at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis. "That was a significant day in my life, tickets were $5.50 per person!" It was then I realized that I wanted to work in a music related industry.

In the late 60’s. I began my career as a radio personality. "I walked into a little 500 watt AM station in Collierville, Tennessee to apply for my first radio job. I asked myself what will I do ifwrvr they hire me? After completing the written application, the General Manager reviewed it and asked me when I could start. I replied, "how about next Monday?" The General Manager asked me if I could go on the air that afternoon! I went on the air that day and was so nervous that the rest of that day is now just a blur."

The next twenty years brought me in close contact with some of the legendary people that played an important rolStax Studiose in the rise and popularity of rock n’ roll and soul music. Stax Records was a hotbed for developing new artists and quickly becoming recognized for Stax Stars like Sam and Dave, Rufus Thomas, Booker T. and the MG’s, Issac Hayes and many more. In the mid 70’s, I worked for Sam Phillips, the founder of Sun Studios, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. "Sam Phillips was a visionary with a knack for finding and promoting musical talents. Sam always wanted to own a radio station and in the 1975 I did afternoon drive for his oldies format station. We played a lot of Elvis."

It was during my last two years of college at the University of Memphis (known as Memphis State at the time) that I met the love of my life, Mary Kathryn. We were both enrolled at the University, Steve and Mary 1Mary was studying for her R.N. in Nursing - I majored in Radio-TV-Film, while working part-time as an on-air personality. Mary, born in upstate New York, came to college in Memphis when her Dad was relocated to Hunstville, Alabama for IBM Corp. We have one daughter, Emily Mira, our grandson Nathan (who we fondly refer to as "Nater-Gator") and our son-in-law, Michael. Mary and I moved to the Beach in March of 1998 where Mary is Director of Case Management for Georgetown Hospital System. We were married in 1975. We enjoy spending time together playing golf, chilling on the Beach, cooking, eating, reading or just plain relaxing.

In 1985, I left the corporate broadcast industry to open a Marketing and Advertising firm. It was during this time that I crafted my business, marketing and advertising skills that added to the growth and development of local area businesses. In my first year in business I was honored to receive recognition from the Memphis Advertising Federation for the creation of a television campaign for the local Steinway piano franchise that later won my marketing company a national award from the National Retail Music Merchants Association. I later rekindled a lifelong friendship with a family friend that had a 100 year home building, real estate and property management history in the Memphis market. It was the close consultation I offered to this company that successfully launched this custom home builder in 1995. "We spent countless hours analyzing the local building competition including the quality and workmanship of their product, pricing, floor plans, use of living space in an effort to help strengthen my clients' position in the marketplace."

This same method is utilized today in my marketing of Real Estate. "The market has changed significantly since I began as a Real Estate Professional in Pawleys Island in 1998. It is critical to communicate with Seller’s their properties strengths and weaknesses and how it will impact the marketing time and pricing of their home." "I cannot take credit for this but someone recently said that Buyers today are willing to pay less for more and even less for less."
